A bilateral friendship award

The 19th Korea-America Friendship Night event took place at Walker Hall of the Grand Walker Hill Seoul on Nov. 24, 2021. The award ceremony, hosted by the Korea-America Association (KAA) and chaired by Dr. Choi Joong-kyung, was adjusted due to restrictions imposed by pandemic quarantine guidelines ― limiting the number of participants, keeping adequate social distancing, and wearing facemasks.
In the spotlight of this annual function was the unanimously-elected 19th Korea-America Friendship Award given to Dr. James T. Laney who served as the 16th United States Ambassador to the Republic of Korea from 1993 to 1996. Prior to taking up his diplomatic position in Korea, he had served as a renowned American educator at Emory University in Georgia: dean of the Candler School of Theology (1969-77) and consecutively its 17th President (1978-93).
He has had three sojourns in Korea over the years. His irrevocable ties to Korea date back to 1947, when he spent a number of years with the U.S. Army Counter-Intelligence Corps. Having witnessed the hardships Koreans suffered in the war-ravaged era, he was determined to return to Korea to work as a Methodist missionary (1959-64), when he taught theology to Korean students as a professor at Yonsei University in Seoul and where the youngest two of his five children were born.
The number 16 has been a special number in his life. The span of his presidency at Emory lasted 16 years. He has 16 grandchildren and he served as the 16th U.S. ambassador to Korea.
In addition to his devotions to Korea as a soldier, a missionary and a professor, he played vital roles in upgrading the U.S.-Korea alliance by wisely resolving a wide range of major issues without letup between the two governments. The top U.S. diplomat vigorously performed his public duties as an inspiring vanguard in strengthening the U.S.-Korea partnership in and out of Korea throughout the decades of his brilliant career.
Even though Laney was unable to join the gala dinner in Korea due to the worldwide inconveniences caused by COVID-19 and his condition for traveling at the age of 94, the mood for recognizing his lifelong qualification to be honored by the award was endorsed by participating dignitaries, not only by Christopher Del Corso, charge d'affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in his welcoming remarks, but also by General Paul J. LaCamera, commander of the U.S.-Korea Combined Forces Command and his deputies in their congratulatory remarks.
It could not be forgotten that the Korean War (1950-53) left a record-breaking combat history with 76 participating nations involved during and after the battles on this small peninsula in Asia. North Korea, the assaulting communist side, was backed by eight countries including China and the Soviet Union, while South Korea was supported by 68 nations under the banner of the United Nations, principally the United States.
Even though the armistice agreement signed July 27, 1953 that ended inter-Korean fighting is still effective 68 years later, numerous violations of truce pacts have been initiated by the
aggressive North, and they are still threatening the South and the U.S. forces stationed at Camp Humphreys in Pyongtaek, by upgrading its nuclear armaments continuously. Under such crucial circumstances, it is dangerous for the policy administrators in the South to support the pursuit of a full-fledged end-of-war declaration with the villainous North.
The 58-year-old KAA's annual night award event in 2021 reassuringly reminded us of the utmost importance of Korea's national security against the armed threats on the Korean Peninsula provoked by the warmongering North Korean regime, seemingly backed by the neighboring giant, China. As advocated by the awardee, Laney, during his ambassadorship in Seoul, the "Korea-U.S. military alliance forged in blood" should definitely be enforced until the North keeps its pledge of removing its own nuclear weapons, even under a possible new administration in South Korea following the 20th presidential election on March 9, 2022.

그는 생애 중 세 차례나 한국에 머물렀다. 그의 돌이킬 수 없는 한국과의 첫 인연은 74년 전인 1947년 (올해 12월7일이 태평양전쟁 발발 80주년) 종전 이후 미국육군 방첩대 간부의 일원으로 남한에서 복무하면서 싹이 텄다. 그 후 한국전쟁을 치루면서 한국인들이 겪었던 고난을 감지한 그는 감리교 선교사로 1959년에 두 번째로 입국하여 1964년 까지 머무르며 헌신적인 봉사를 하였다. 감리교 선교사로서, 연세대학교 신학교수로 한국사회의 계몽과 발전에 기여하면서, 5명의 자녀 중 막내 2명도 한국에서 태어났다.
그의 사생활이나 공직경력을 90여년 지나 온 오랜 생애 중 ‘16’이라는 두 자리 숫자는 그에게는 우연의 일치였음을 보여준다. 에모리대학에서의 그의 총장재직기간이 꼭 “16년”이었다. 그의 5명의 자녀에게서 낳은 손주들의 수가 모두 “16명”이다. 아이러니하게도 그의 주한미국대사 취임순위가 1948년 8월15일 시장경제를 지향하는 역사적인 자유민주공화국이 한반도 역사상 최초로 건국 출범한 이래 “16회”였다.
그가 육군 방첩대 장교, 감리교 선교사, 연세대 신학 교수 등으로 한국을 위하여 헌신한 것은 물론이지만, 세 번째 최고위직 미국 외교관으로 한국에 부임하여서도 한미양국정부간 주요 현안들을 원만하게 타결하면서 ‘한미상호방위조약’을 격상시키는데 중추적인 역할을 하였다. 한국주재 미국대사로 3년3개월의 재임기간 중 뿐만 아니라 임기를 마치고 귀국한 이후까지도 수 10년의 탁월한 경력기간 중 그는 한국 안과 밖을 불문하고 ‘한미피트너십’을 강화시키는데 고무적인 선봉장으로서 공적 임무를 힘차게 수행하였다.
‘한미우호상’을 다소 뒤늦게 받게 된 것으로 여겨지는 레이니 수상자는 코로나-19로 인한 범세계적인 불편과 94세의 고령으로 인한 여행이 부자유로운 개인건강 때문에 한국에서 열린 축하만찬에는 참석을 할 수 없었다. 그러나 그의 수상자로서의 충분한 자격을 인정하는 분위기는 만찬행사에서 널리 부각고조 되었다. 내빈으로 참석했던 미국대사관의 크리스토퍼 델 코르소 대리대사의 환영사와 육군장성들인 한미연합사 폴 J. 라카메라 사령관과 그의 한미양측 부사령관들의 축사에서도 수상자의 업적들이 어김없이 강조되었다.
한국전쟁 (1950-53)은 아시아의 작은 반도에서 치루어 진 전쟁이었지만 전투 중과 전후 복구 때를 통틀어 쌍방 모두 합쳐 76개국이나 참여했던 수치로 치면 인류역사상 간과할 수 없는 세계기록으로 남는다. 남침을 했던 북한은 중공과 소련을 위주로 모두 8개의 공산위성국가들의 지원을 받았던 반면, 방어를 해야 했던 남한은 유엔의 깃발 아래 미국을 위시하여 무려 68개국의 도움을 받았다,
1953년 7월27일 체결되어 발효한 남북휴전협정이 68년 넘게 유효함에도 불구, 그간 호전적인 북한에 의한 정전협정위반 사례가 수시로 자행되어 왔으며, 그들은 여전히 핵무기를 지속적으로 개발하고 개량시켜 남한전역은 물론 평택 캠프 험프리스의 주한미군 기지뿐만 아니라 여타 해외 미군군사기지까지도 위협을 하고 있다, 이와 같은 중차대한 상황에서 남한의 중북과 친중 이념에 물들어 있는 정책당국자들이 북한과의 본격적인 종전선언을 적극적으로 추구함은 위험하기 짝이 없는 어리석은 이적행위의 발상으로 밖에는 볼 수 없다.
출범 58주년을 맞은 한미협회의 2021년 연례행사인 ‘한미친선의 밤‘ 시상식 만찬모임은 전쟁광 북한이 그의 과거 혈맹이었던 중국의 엄호 하에 한반도를 무력으로 위협함에 대비하여 남한의 굳건한 안보현안대처를 다시 한번 상기시키는 주요 계기를 마련해 주었다. 레이니 수상자가 그의 주한미국대사 시절 주장하였듯이 “혈맹으로 맺어진 한미상호방위조약”은 북한이 핵개발 폐기 공약을 철회하지 않는 한 더욱 강화해야 되며 오는 2022년 3월9일로 예정된 한국의 제20대 대통령선거 이후 극히 많은 정책입안 상의 변화가 온다 하여도 강경한 입장을 고수하여야만 될 것이다. -이상-

나이가 80이 넘은 고령자가 이렇게 활동하는 모습이 참으로 대견스럽고 자랑스럽습니다.
수상자가 코카콜라 전회장 에게서 성실봉사의 은혜로 거액의 유산을 물려 받아 전액을 Emory대학 발전기금으로 내놓은 일화는 세계적으로 너무 유명한 교육가로 알려진 이야기이지요.- 김철규

동네에서 만난 노인을 친구 해줬더니 코카콜라 회장Robert Woodruff 라서 1억 5백만불의 유산을받아 에모리대학에 기증한 분이군요
나중에 주한 미대사도하고 에모리대학총장도하신분이군요 당연히 상받을만 합니다 - 김덕희

코로나-19로 많은 제약이 있음에도 불구성대하게 거행된 멋진 행사였습니다. 수상자 부부도 고령 (1927년 생) 이시고 장거리 여행에 지장이 있는 건강 상태로 참석하지 못했던 시상식을 겸한 잔치였습니다.
연세대학교에서 신학을 가르치신 인연으로 지금 70~80대 사람들은 배운 분들도 많이 있습니다.
내빈으로 참석하였던 주한마대사관 대리대사 (대사는 아직 공석) 한미연합사 사령관과 한미양측 부사령관 모두 이구동성으로 수상자를 격찬하던 모습을 보니 수상자를 정말 멋진 분을 선책했다는 확신을 가졌습니다.

Jame T. Laney 신학 교수님이 연세대학에서 신학교수로 재직하신 당시 (1959- 1964) 저도 연세대학교에 있었는데 이제 생각하니 우리 대학 2학년 때, 1959년, 간호학생들은 2 학년 때 가관식이라는 머리에 nurse (간호사) cap을 씨워주는 식을 하는데 그 때 축도를 하신 분으로 생각합니다. 손난주

全昌一 회장의 손녀 소희 (巢姬) 양은 저도 개교 행사날 가 본 제주국제학교 중 하나인 카나다계 Brangsum 고등학교를 우수한 성적으로 졸업하고, 바로 한미우호상 수상지인 Laney박사가 8년 학장, 16년 총장을 지낸 남부 Gerogia주 소재 명문학교인 Emory대학에 진학 4년 과정을 우수한 성적으로 졸업하고, 현재 Kansas주 소재 명문 사립대학인 Washington대학에서 물리학 박사과정을 밟고 있는 장래가 촉망 되는 자랑스러운 재원임을 본 제19회 한미친선의 밤 행사를 통하여 다시 한번 상기 시켜 줍니다. 축하 드립니다. 李洪九 전 국무총리께서도 Emory대학에서 석사과정 (박사는 Yale대학)을 거치셨습니다.

I wanted to let you know that I have been keeping up with your articles.
It is good to see that you can occupy your time by touching others with your commentaries.
I truly hope that all is well with you, your family, and friends.
Since the virus, I have been doing little at the university.
Most labs are virtual online now without hands-on.
It's amazing that I'm still counted as "essential personnel."
However, my nightly ESL classes kick-in once again January 10.
I will have a few new Korean students.
I look forward to that.
My wife Yemi continues working at the shopping mall clothing store (owned by a Korean man).
Our daughter Soyoung is still at home and is doing some kind of clothing online business.
Our garage is full of USPS boxes and envelopes.
ANYWAY, I don't inquire about that.
Recently, we remodeled our front porch and back deck.
A Korean carpenter did a fantastic job.
One day he asked me to go buy some special paint and shouted "Hurry, hurry! Need now!"
I asked my wife why did Mr. Choi shout at me when I'm doing him a favor.
She responded, "Oh, he cannot hear well."
So, his hearing aid is not workable.
And actually, now I must turn up the volume on the TV news.
I always joke with my friends that "It's all downhill after the age of fifty."
However, I am grateful for each day and I don't mind getting old and I accept what comes with that.
I wish you and your family and friends a prosperous 2022.
I continue to look forward to seeing you in Thoughts of the Times.

Laney 전 주한 미합중국 대사님 기사를 게재 하신 것을 잘 읽어 보았으며 마침 제 아들 쪽 큰 손녀가 작년에 Emory에 입학하여 현재 수학 중에 있어 카톡으로 보내서 잘 읽어 보라고 전달하면서 훌륭하신 이 전무님 같은 동우를 둔 것을 고맙게 생각하였기에 짧은 글이지만 이렇게 소식을 올립니다. 코로나 와중에도 계속 건강하시고 댁 내 평안하시기를 기원합니다. 감사합니다.

손녀가 에모리대학교에서 수학을 한다니 반가워요. 한미협회 상훈위원장 직책을 맡다보니 훌륭한 분을 찾아내어 시상을 하였지요. 제16대 주한미합중국대사도 지내셨지만 에모리대학교 총장으로 16년 (그이전 신학대학장 8년)이나 지내셨고 손주 16명 중 9명이 에모리대학교 출신인 세계적으로 저몀한 분에게서 고맙다는 이멜을 두차례나 받아 영광이었습니다. 감사합니다. 건강하세요.
